Plant Care Essentials

Light Requirements

Understanding your plant's light needs is crucial for its health and growth. Here's a quick guide:

  • Bright Direct: Sunlight directly hitting the plant (south-facing window)
  • Bright Indirect: Near a window but not in direct sunbeams
  • Medium: A few meters from a window or filtered through curtains
  • Low: No direct sunlight but still some ambient light

Rotate your plants every few weeks to ensure even growth. During winter months when daylight hours are shorter, consider relocating plants closer to windows.

Watering Tips

Over-watering is the number one cause of plant death. Here are our watering recommendations:

  • Check before watering: Insert your finger about 2-5 cm into the soil - only water if it feels dry
  • Water thoroughly: Ensure water reaches the roots, then let excess drain away
  • Adjust seasonally: Most plants need less water in winter than summer
  • Consider humidity: Plants with tropical origins often benefit from increased humidity

Use room-temperature water and consider collecting rainwater for your plants, as it's free from chemicals found in tap water.

Soil & Nutrition

Different plants have different soil preferences, but most indoor plants thrive in a well-draining mix:

  • Standard Mix: Equal parts potting soil, perlite, and coconut coir
  • Succulents: Add extra perlite/sand for better drainage
  • Tropicals: Add extra organic matter like bark chips

During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plants with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Most houseplants benefit from fertilizing once a month.

Common Issues

Even with the best care, plants can develop problems. Here are some common issues and solutions:

  • Yellow leaves: Often indicates overwatering or poor drainage
  • Brown leaf tips: Usually caused by low humidity or salt buildup from fertilizer
  • Leggy growth: Plant stretching toward light source; move to a brighter location
  • Pest infestations: Isolate affected plants and treat with appropriate organic solutions

Regular inspection of your plants can help catch problems early. Pay special attention to the undersides of leaves where pests often hide.
